Choose a team: Zombies vs Unicorns edited by Justine Larbalestier and Holly Black

Standard

Surely zombies are only good for shooting, burning,  slashing, chain sawing, crushing or dismembering in any other way you can mention.  They are the lowest and most pathetic minion of any bad guy in every computer game I play and they’ll never made great heroes.  On the other hand there just aren’t enough good stories about Unicorns.

Zombies Vs Unicorns, a collection of short stories started as a blog  argument between Holly Black and Justine Larbalestier about which mythical creature were better, zombies or unicorns.  They enlisted a few of their mates (a few notables for me being, Garth Nix, Margo Lanagan and Meg Cabot) to choose a side and defend their stance with a short story.  The argument rages between the short stories providing prefaces for each.  As each story is completely independent you can read just your favourite authors, read your teams contributions (Go Unicorn!) or as I did finally end up reading all of them.

I picked the book up… because it had unicorns and as I said, there’s not enough good unicorn stories.

I kept reading… because the marvellous authors made me.  These guys know their stuff when it comes to zombies, unicorns and writing.

I would recommend it to… those who love short stories and the variety of different settings, characters, language and story this book can provide.  There’s something for everyone.  I would also give it to anyone who doesn’t mind a good laugh as some of the stories are humourous and certainly the prefaces between Holly and Justine are worth a read.
